Reflecting on the Journey

Mxolisi Shongwe, the lead coordinator of the tour, took the stage to share the remarkable journey of the B2B Cycle Tour. He traced its origins back to the inaugural ride, when ALPHSZ (then known as Sanlam) provided two kombis to transport a small group of daring cyclists back from Lavumisa after conquering the grueling 240km challenge. Shongwe highlighted how ALPHSZ’s continued support transformed the event into an official tour, evolving it into an inclusive, free-timed challenge. Today, the tour accommodates cyclists of all levels, with distances ranging from the accessible 100km ride from Lukhula to Lavumisa to the formidable 240km border to border route. Shongwe expressed deep gratitude to ALPHSZ for their unwavering sponsorship, which has been instrumental in promoting cyclist safety and growing the event into a regional attraction.

A Tourism Powerhouse

Mr. Vusi N. Dlamini, CEO of the Eswatini Tourism Authority (ETA), spoke passionately about the tour’s role as a significant tourism draw. He highlighted the formal partnership established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed before last year’s edition, which solidified ETA's commitment to the tour’s success. With participants registering from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, and Mozambique, the B2B Cycle Tour has become a magnet for regional visitors, showcasing Eswatini’s scenic routes and hospitality. Dlamini reaffirmed the Authority’s dedication to ensuring the event’s continued growth as a premier tourism and sporting event.

ALPHSZ’s Commitment to Health and Wealth

Thandile Nxumalo, ALPHSZ Group CEO, delivered an inspiring address, connecting the company’s mission of managing and growing the wealth of EmaSwati to the importance of promoting health. She emphasized that wealth thrives when people thrive, and the B2B Cycle Tour embodies this philosophy by encouraging physical fitness and community engagement. Nxumalo announced a significant sponsorship of E100,000 for the 2025 edition—a substantial increase from E50,000 two years ago and E62,000 last year. She also commended the Royal Eswatini Police Services, the Road Safety Council, and the Eswatini Tourism Authority for their critical contributions to the tour’s success, ensuring safety and seamless execution.

The tour’s impeccable safety record, with no accidents to date, was highlighted as a remarkable achievement. The representative noted that while road-based sporting events often face criticism for litter and waste, the B2B Cycle Tour sets a high standard for environmental responsibility. Cyclists were encouraged to maintain this exemplary conduct, serving as a model for other sports communities.

A Celebrated Passage Through Manzini

Mzomuhlo Magagula, representing the Municipal Council of Manzini (MCM), highlighted the tour’s unique journey through the heart of Eswatini—Manzini—where riders pass the “180km to go” mark. He noted that the 240km riders enjoy a 10-minute breakfast stop in Manzini, refueling for the journey ahead. At this point, a second wave of riders tackling the 180km challenge joins the tour. This stop also sparks a rally of Manzini residents and other cyclists who escort the cyclists out of the city, creating a vibrant, traffic-controlled ride that offers a safe space for new cyclists finding their footing in the sport. Magagula emphasized the privilege of granting the tour passage through Manzini, fostering community engagement and safety.

Their contributions, including the provision of specialized reflective vests and jackets for Marshals, and early-morning riders tackling the 240km and 180km routes, have significantly enhanced cyclist safety. Their co-hosting of a water station at Treetops Game Resort with ALPHSZ last year was also noted, with assurances of their continued support for the 2025 tour.
